Canada’s Largest Legacy Yet!

Jim Monolith, April 1st 2025

On Saturday, March 29th, 2025, Legacy of the North and Enter the Battlefield joined forces once again to host the largest Legacy tournament ever held in Canada. A total of 107 players gathered at Enter the Battlefield’s Oakville location for the first-ever Canadian Legacy 5K. Competitors traveled from as far as Columbus, Ohio, and Thunder Bay, Ontario, eager to battle for a $5,000 store credit prize pool and collect crucial points toward Season 6 of King of the North.

First and foremost, I want to extend heartfelt thanks to Kris Fekete and Jay Grant of Enter the Battlefield for partnering with Legacy of the North to make this incredible event possible. Their support has been instrumental in our growth, and we’re truly grateful for the collaboration. A huge shoutout also goes to our outstanding media team: Ben Kwan of Lazy MTG, Gabe Aiello (@GabesaurusREX), and our commentators David Marino and Will Sorley, who brought the stream to life. Lastly, thank you to each and every player who made the journey—through an ice storm, no less—to be part of this unforgettable day.

Despite a minor technical delay pushing our start time to just after 11:00 a.m., the tournament ran exceptionally well throughout the day. As both an organizer and participant—alongside my wife and our dog Sherman—I was thrilled to see everything come together so smoothly. I’ll admit, I scheduled the event to coincide with my birthday, and it turned out to be the best gift I could’ve asked for.

Every round was more enjoyable than the last. My opponents were not only skilled and competitive, but also respectful and fun to play against. The energy in the room was electric, yet welcoming—a perfect blend of intensity and camaraderie. What made the day even better was that I didn’t have to worry about logistics during the event. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of the judges, store staff, and media crew, I was able to simply enjoy playing the game I love.

Around mid-day, we took a break for lunch, during which Enter the Battlefield generously provided free pizza for over 120 attendees—plenty to go around. The break was followed by a raffle featuring some exciting prizes, including art prints and a Revised Taiga, keeping the excitement high before we dove back into the action.

Once lunch wrapped up, the stakes grew higher. For many players, the next few rounds represented a chance to accumulate key league points or even vie for a coveted Top 8 finish. After seven intense rounds of Swiss play filled with tight matches and impressive displays of skill, our Legacy 5K Top 8 emerged:

  • Troy Warrington – Eldrazi
  • Zack Chatel – 12 post
  • Sia Y – UB Tempo
  • Robert Webster – BW Blink
  • Chris Ha – UB Tempo
  • Drake Honess – Red Painter
  • Peter Kostecki-Macdougall – Merfolk
  • Kyle Christensen – Temur Delver

The Top 8 playoffs were a thrilling conclusion to an already unforgettable day. After three elimination rounds, here’s how the final standings shook out:

  1. Sia Y – UB Tempo
  2. Robert Webster – BW Blink
  3. Zack Chatel – 12 post
  4. Kyle Christensen – Temur Delver
  5. Troy Warrington – Eldrazi
  6. Chris Ha – UB Tempo
  7. Drake Honess – Red Painter
  8. Peter Kostecki-Macdougall – Merfolk

Congratulations to all of our Top 8 competitors, and especially to Sia Y for taking it all down with an exceptional run on UB Tempo! The Southern Ontario Legacy scene is no joke—filled with skilled pilots of both pet decks and top-tier strategies. To reach the Top 8 in a field this competitive takes preparation, focus, a little luck, and a lot of heart. Everyone who participated should be proud of their performance, regardless of record!

Through-out the whole day the store was full of laughs and smiles, handshakes and fist bumps, I honestly believe with every fibre of my being that the Legacy community is the best in all of trading card games. We have built something special together and have become a true family in the process.

Following the tournament many groups broke off and headed to many restaurants and bars, to celebrate and regale each other with the battles and achievements throughout the day. For the next big tournament we plan on reserving a full bar so no story is missed and no one is left out!

Thank you all so much and long live Legacy of the North!
